November 3, 2017 17:26 UTC ![]() A key aim of the Renewable Fuel Standard was to reduce US dependence on foreign oil while increasing the use of renewable fuels when it was passed in 2005. Yet today it could be poised to have the opposite effect on imports, as some US refiners say they are being crushed by the high cost of compliance which, in turn, could lead to closure of some refineries — and increased dependence on foreign oil. |

August 29, 2016 04:01 UTC ![]() The system devised to force compliance with the US Renewable Fuel Standard appears to be backfiring, forcing refiners to spend more on buying increasingly expensive credits than actually blending renewables into the nation’s transportation fuel. |

February 16, 2016 14:38 UTC ![]() One of my absolute favorite conferences that I attend every year is the National Ethanol Conference put on by the Renewable Fuels Association, this year running from Feb. 15-17. They’re always loaded with fiery speaker sessions and passionate speeches on issues both benefiting and plaguing the US ethanol industry. |

April 17, 2015 00:03 UTC ![]() Time was when humanity seemed to take endless leaps forward in terms of technology. There was a sense that everyone was pushing forward at the same time and in the same direction. In today’s world, when investing in the next big tech, the great diaspora of ideas can be a challenge that divides investment funds, and has the ability to muddle that sense of direction, that notion of collective tech-progress. Which brings us to cars. Combustion engines surely can’t go on for ever, that much is clear, but in that maelstrom of ideas, could the electric car now be attaining a critical mass? And could the two great energy and transport rivals — oil and biofuels — be developing a blind spot around their rise? automobiles, biofuels, care, crude, electric power, elon musk, energy, gasoline, netherlands, RFS, tesla, UK, Uncategorized, US

February 27, 2015 12:01 UTC ![]() Only 23 miles of State Highway 121 separates Fort Worth, where the National Biodiesel Board held its annual conference in January, and Grapevine, where the National Ethanol Conference set up shop last week. But the two industries couldn’t be further apart when it comes to their perspectives for the immediate future. |

February 24, 2015 12:01 UTC ![]() Attendees of the National Ethanol Conference in suburban Dallas last week who were hoping to hear, at long last, what biofuels volumes the US Environmental Protection Agency would require in the overdue 2014 and 2015 Renewable Fuel Standards likely left disappointed. |
