It’s been said that one of the key reasons the US has been able to experience an oil and gas boom is the long-established law that mineral rights belong to the land owner. It’s not what you generally find in most countries, and it gives those land owners an incentive to allow exploration on their property and share in the riches that might be pulled out of the ground.

But the relationship between land owner and exploration company is not always pretty. Brian Hansen, managing editor of Platts’ Inside Energy, based in Washington, looked at that side of it last year, and we’re proud to announce that he has been awarded the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Public Service Award for newsletter journalism.
